This morning I saw a young bear walking purposefully up my dirt road. I was amused at his demeanor, then I remembered it was garbage day. A quick assessment of my garbage can showed he had knocked it over, but hadn't opened it up. Guess our garbage isn't good enough for him.
Kidding aside, thank goodness he didn't see anything of interest. Bear will return regularly to neighborhoods where they’ve found food, so it’s imperative not to tempt them. They get into trouble when they start to return regularly to an area because they've discovered it can be relied on to provide them with food. If a bear becomes a "nuisance" bear he may be relocated, or if he's irritable and threatening he may even be euthanized. This is an unfair ending to a life that's taken a wrong turn because we humans created a temptation too good to turn down.
This is a reminder the northeast bear population is active this time of year as they get ready for their winter hibernation. They are generally active until mid November.
Respect the bear and your neighbors by bear-proofing your property so your local bears don’t start hanging around.
A few bear-proofing tips:
~ Don’t leave food outside on your deck, yard, or around your grill.
~Bird feeders should be secured at least 12 feet above the ground between trees or from an upper deck.
~ Avoid leaving anything out that bear will see as food – carved pumpkins should not be left out overnight, even decorative Indian corn can be a treat for them.
Your neighbors will thank you, and you may be saving the life of a bear!
Resources for more information include your state's environmental or wildlife agency and animal protection organizations.A couple in my area are the Bear Trust, a research collaborative, and The Bear Group, an activist group committed to protecting the bear population.
