Many people are moving to e-greeting cards, but I believe there will always be a form of mailed holiday greetings. Don't let them be wasted paper. Holiday cards are great for cutting up for decoupage or putting aside for children or adult projects later in the year. One of my post holidays traditions is to cut the cards into gift tags. You won't ever have to buy tags again, as there's always a wide array of colors and patterns for next years gifts!

This year we used our old cards for tags and to handmake new cards...
The kids wanted to give cards to their teachers and schoolmates so we cut pictures out of the old cards with fancy sissors and glued them to costruction paper cards.
It was a short-term re-use solution...it gave the kids a nice project, and allowed us to make very inexpensive cards for their friends, but ultimately the cards will (hopefully) be fully recycled.
I've followed your advice. We didn't throw away the paper cards.
