2010 the Year of Biodiversity

The UN has declared 2010 as The Year of Biodiversity. We are losing species of plants, amphibians, animals and insects at a frantic pace. In the US we're paving over 1.25 mill. acres of land that wasn't previously paved. That means less water permeability & less habitat for wildlife and plants.

According to an article by Richard Black,  Environment correspondent on the  BBC News website

"With species extinctions running at about 1,000 times the "natural" or "background" rate, some biologists contend that we are in the middle of the Earth's sixth great extinction - the previous five stemming from natural events such as asteroid impacts."
